Hiking Hadrian’s Wall

The full English Breakfast and we were ready for hiking.
It’s official we are on the right path. First we catch a bus to where we want to start then walk back to our BnB. We begin at the just built Northumberland Visitor Centre. Here I am before the hike

The weather is perfect, cool, cloudy and sunny patches. The trail is practically just ours.

There is it, Hadrian’s Wall. It was built in the second century AD in the reign of the emperor Hadrian, making it about 1900 years old. It runs about 73 miles. Some parts are just a few feet high and others taller than Norman.

The views are beautiful, fields of sheep and dry stone walls everywhere.

Along the way there are spots where a turret once stood. How it would have been and how it is today.

The trail has been well maintained and steps going up and down are easily managed. Glad I brought my hiking stick.

A lot of ups and downs.

Great styles for getting over dry stone walls.

The stones in the wall are perfectly flat on the front. Over the many years, the local farmers have “borrowed” the stones for their own walls. You can see these perfect blocks in other places now.

Resting on the wall

We also found forts along the wall, placed every Roman mile.

It surprising how much is left in place.

Looking up at the Fort.
Lunch time. A packed lunch from our host.

Here you can see how high the wall was in spots.

And of course a sheep photo

Yellow Bunny also has a chance to get up close to the wall.

It goes on and on.

Over the 6 1/2 hours of walking (minus the stop for lunch and the cider) we saw very few people. Scottish hiker assisted with this one.
One of the last sites we came to was Castle Thirlwall built in the 12th century. It fell into disrepair in the 17th century. What a structure still stands today.

Spooky and beautiful

By now we are less than 2 miles from home so we stopped in Greenhead for a well deserved cider. It was so refreshing!

On way home.

A good day!

  1. How peaceful it must have felt to walk along the trail without any other travelers. Just you and your imaginations.

  2. I’m impressed. That is a long walk, after a longer trip from Guernsey. I think PM Trudeau’s little son is a Hadrian.
