Liberation Day fireworks last night. A good show.
This morning, our good friend Sam who grew up on Guernsey but now lives in Victoria had her friend Liz take us to some beaches. What a pleasure to have someone who knows the island to show us such special spots.
This is Petit Pot with lovely sand and a waterfall that used to be a water powered mill.
That’s Liz! And Norm testing the beach
Next stop was one of the beaches where Liz goes swimming. She swims every day all year at different places!
Such a rugged coast line but Liz says you learn where and how to swim with the tides and rocks.
A lookout spot and you can see the two cruise ships in the background.
Our final beach was at Fermain Bay and the best of all since we got to hike along the coast to a Beach Cafe.
Bluebells are just finishing but you can see white flowers which are wild garlic.
The hike gave you a perfect view of the ocean.
And the treats at the cafe!
Liz headed to her lunch date and we walked the coastal path back to town. The water, the sun, the path all made it perfect walk.
Two bathing pools right along the ocean. Not quite ready this time of year. Norm is ready to dive in though.
Looking away from town too
Once back Norm returned to our home to get some already read books to give to a Charity shop (thrift store) and then he could buy more. While there I managed to buy a couple of things but it was incredible how busy the store was. There must have been 20 people shopping. I asked the clerk what was going on. She said we are never busy until the cruise ships come to town. Who knew that’s what cruise people do?
Our next adventure was to catch a bus to the German Occupation Museum. We got there with less than an hour to look but even before we had seen half of the displays, we were invited to a lecture by the man who owns the museum. What a treat! We learned so much about life under German occupation from 1940-1945.
Then they let us go back and finish looking although the museum was now closed. We were amazed at how many artifacts had been collected. There were probably more than a dozen rooms to view.
Life on Guernsey was very difficult during these five years. Many people died, some shipped away, all were starving and they all suffered terrible hardships.
There was more to see than time permitted. Quite something.
Before heading home, we needed dinner. Excellent meal at Dix-Neuf. Prawn crusted salmon on a smashed potato and steamed vegetables. Norm - Chili chicken cashew noodles. Both delicious.
We are more in love with Guernsey every day. Thanks Liz.
What a charming place to visit. I'm sure you have read The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, which would really come alive for you seeing things first hand.
