Herm

The wind was blowing today and there were white caps on the water but the boat was going to Herm and we were on board. Herm is a small island 20 minutes from Guernsey. It is 2.4 kms long and .8 km wide. The population is less than 100. Named Herm probably because the Norse word for arm (the shape of the island) was haerme.
I don’t think I have ever been on a boat that rocked and rolled so much. Norm went out on deck to help guide the boat but couldn’t get back to his seat so just held on till things calmed down.

Our boat to get there and back.

The island is a quiet and peaceful, no cars. It is possible to walk around the whole island and see many beaches. Our first hike was past Robert’s cross and then up the hill to the rocks at the top.

Norm had to crawl in. A little windy at top.

Signs to pay attention to!

The first beach we found was called Shell Beach. Apparently there are 250 different types of shells on this beach.

And an artist look at how nature works with the rocks.

We walked along other sandy beaches and at two of them we found cafes, very civilized.

The path around the island has few people and a narrow path, windy as you round the west side.

Along the paths were wild garlic, lots of it!

Happy walkers

Back to Guernsey on calm seas. Needed to get some energy for the walk Norm proposed to St Sampson, only about 4 kms away.

It is quite possible take a scone put butter (Guernsey butter-high fat) along with jam and then top it with clotted cream and not feel a bit guilty! So good.
So off we went to St Sampson when it started to rain. Norm with no rain coat but we kept going. Almost an hour and we weren’t quite in the right spot we decided we needed to catch a bus and get dry. Standing in the pouring rain with no bus coming, Norm spots one going the opposite direction. What the heck, almost got hit by a car as we ran across the street. And for the next hour we went around the island (again) and got dry but ended up back in town.

I had to take this picture. We always know we are on the right way to our Airbnb when we see Itchyfeet. What a great name for a business.
Now we are off to catch an overnight ferry to Portsmouth and then a train to Newcastle. Could be a long day and night.
