The train was already quite full and at the first stop probably 50 or more people got on. The train was heading to Venice. With all the people and their suitcases, we assumed they were going to the Trieste Airport. The aisles were crowded with people and suitcases. Second stop was the airport and NO ONE was getting off! With as much effort as possible with our two backpacks each we shoved our way to the exit. When I got there the door was closing! So I pushed it opened while Norm worked his way to the door. We made it but I guess we shouldn’t assume where people are going…
The airport!! It was the quietest airport we’ve ever seen, and one of the largest. Just the long pedestrian overpass from the tracks into the main air terminal seemed hundreds of metres long — and no moving sidewalks. Maybe the airport was built for huge future traffic levels that haven’t shown up yet. So we had some lunch and waited for the flight to Rome.
Off we went and watched the rain pour. It was definitely the perfect time to leave Trieste.
Yellow Bunny liked the flight
Once in Rome we waited for the next connection to Amsterdam.
A view from the plane coming into Rome.
And we’re now two flights later at the Zaan Hotel in Zaandam. Lots of “Zaan” place names here, all related to the Zaan River nearby.
Here’s our hotel room at Z’dam. Of course it’s called the Zaan Hotel, close to where Duncan, Lauraine and Odessa live at (queue the Zs again) Koog aan de Zaan. They have friends coming to stay this week, so we’ll lodge at the Zaan. A family dinner is planned for Monday evening, coincidentally Duncan’s birthday. Lang zal se leven!
