A perfect day for biking. The sun is shining, a light breeze and fresh air. Breakfast again had ample food (supplies) and we met a lovely couple from England although the wife was Dutch. Great conversations.
We were on the bikes by 9am and we first passed through some woods, not really a forest. But beautiful.
We headed towards the ocean and the wind was quite strong, more effort keeps you in better shape???
Signs along the way are with two languages. Here in Friesland we are off the beaten path from the rest of the Netherlands. Frisian is the local dialect and the top word with Dutch below. And veeroosters- a cattle guard, interesting!
The lady of Stavoren is known for the mysterious decline of the city after a rich and wealthy past.
What I noticed were the thousands of bugs.If you look closely you can see them on her face. Here is another look. So many stuck to walls and windows!
Along the dike where found a remnant of the war. And of course he went inside And more sheep everywhere.
Next stop Hindeloopen. Time for a look and drink.
The tower in town has a serious lean to it but it is still standing so must be ok.
Hindeloopen was a really pretty town.
We stopped at Workum for lunch and to visit the Jopie Huisman exhibit. It was definitely worth seeing although a lot was in Dutch. He was a very creative and unusual artist. Here is a sample of two of his works. The underwear was actually on display beside the painting. Jopie said it was repaired 147 times! He collected garbage, everyday items and strange things - an artist! He said "objects that have been discarded as rubbish change into something that can touch you deeply."
Next stop Makkum where Norm wanted to see Makkum pottery. We learned the pottery place closed 4 years ago. So a drink instead.
Makkum does promote the arts.....
heading to our last stop, Harlingen. We biked along the dike with the North Sea on one side and sheep and a lot of sheep poop on the other.
Our hotel for tonight. Built 1630.
