Exploring by bike

The sun is shining so it is a good day to go biking. Earlier today Jasper, Kees and Dineke's son, biked here from Elst, his home 14 kms away with his son, Boris. What a cutie.

Norm brought Boris some books about animals. He likes them.

After lunch we headed out on the bikes to down town Nijmegen, left the bikes in a bike garage and then we went walking. First we crossed the Waal river then walked up and down the river edge. An amazing number of barges travel from Rotterdam to Germany every day. Watching from the bridge we saw 8 in a just a few minutes.
What is fascinating about this area is that Nijmegen has designed a system to prevent flooding. They create a diversion channel from some farm land (and a few unfortunates houses) and created an island so the water can be diverted thereby preventing serious flooding.

I'm sure an engineering masterpiece. So we walked and walked. The weather was like summer, 24'.
 A moment to relax,

Even the bridges are designed with watching rowing in mind.

We still have to cross another bridge to get back across the Waal to Nijmegen.

My first selfie this trip.

Norman and Kees watching more barges go by from the bridge.

Back on our bikes heading home. Note the traffic lights just for bikes and our own bike lane.......almost like Victoria.

Can you see Norman, the man with the hat? Kees is to his left and just infront of Norman is Dineke.
Yellow Bunny wanted to ride too. She was is the child seat behind me.

Now time to relax before Dineke treated us to a traditional Dutch dinner, white asparagus with butter, ham, boiled eggs and mashed potatoes. And of course some white wine.  Smaakt Lekker.
