Day Care and the walk (escape) to Nijmegen

The day starts early when you have 3 children under the age of 4 spending the day with you, or at least with their Oma and Opa. It was fun playing with Lisa, her brother, Teun and their cousin, Boris. You get to be a child again. Or in Norm's case, be an Opa.

Teun and Lisa with Norman colouring my little pony.
By 10 we thought it time to head into town, only 30 minutes away.
 Teun looking pretty serious.
We dressed for warmth but after 30 minutes we were taking off our coats. Right at the end of our street is a real wind mill, Unfortunaley today it sells pet food.
First stop, a coffee and tea at Hema department store. It has a view of historical buildings at the "Grote Markt". Here is the city hall with a Heineken beer  served at the main entrance. Might be a good idea for BC polictians. Nijmegen is the oldest city in the Netherlands, dating back over 2,000 years to the Romans. There are few ruins remaining today.

The old city wall is still standing in some spots. Norm is protecting the city from envaders.
We were surprised about this description of Nijmegen we found as we explored the old town.
The historical district in Nijmegen has preserved as many buildings as possible. Much of the city centre was destroyed with bombing during World War Two by the Americans. (An accident). Nijmegen was the first Dutch city to fall to the Germans and liberated September 1944.
You have to love kaas, cheese.

Lunch in the old town was delicious but more "new age". Bagels - not too Dutch.

And for dessert......Hazelnut and mango gelato
Walking home we went through the Kronenburgerpark. Beautiful green space.

Some trees lack beauty, we think, maybe it looks better next year.

Looking across the Waal. We walked this bridge yesterday.

Home again and back to the day care action.

We finished the day with again a real Dutch meal. A meal Norm's mother used to make, Stamppot and meatballs. Smaakt Lekker.

Good night Lisa.
