Day One Hiking the Beara Peninsula

Our Bed and Breakfast at Castletownbere was perfect. Good sleep, fresh air, generous breakfast and food to take for the hike.
My poached eggs. Norm's scrambled eggs with salmon
And Heather's raisin bread French toast with bacon. Brad had a pancake with maple syrup and a side of salmon. The best!

We were so excited, we started eating before photo taking, a good sign.

So now we are filled up and ready to start our hike.

You might notice the low cloud behind us. And yes we are about to climb some hills into the clouds.
The views are stunning along the trail and as we got higher and higher the wind got stronger and stronger but we were warm.

The higher we went, more clouds but we could still see the bright yellow man.

 Yellow Bunny meets Yellow Man

Peat is used to heat homes and you can still see where they cut it out of the ground.

Our navigators...

Always interesting things to see along the way.

Sometimes the wind was so strong you were sure you would get blown over.
Fortunately even with the fog and the wind, we could still find the yellow man.
 Some fun shots.
Norm and Gunnera on the way down to Allihies, our stop for the night.

Getting close to Allihies and Brad showing Norman how to walk backwards. Town views are visible, a very small town.

Welcome to Allihies
The town had very colourful buildings and an O'Neill Pub. Just a note that my grandmother was Annie Laura O'Neill. Maybe we are related to some of the O'Neills here...

After dinner at O'Neill's we went for a walk to the beach. 100,000 tons of crushed quartz has  washed down from the copper mines to the beach.
A little exploring and then Norm waded back to the shore. Norman!!

And a little artist touch at the shore.
 To bed for tomorrow's hike.
