Oops, two new ships came in.
We are staying in Alfama, the old part of town. Lots of stairs and lots of walking. Over the last two days we have explored Alfama, Baixa Chiado and Alto. Today we are off to Belem.
After our breakfast of yogurt and granola we took a tram and bus to get there.
A very bumpy ride for Yellow Bunny.
Belem is know as the age of discovery. Ships departed from here to trade with the Orient and Asia. Our first stop was the LX Factory. What a “cool” place, design shops and trendy eateries. It once was an industrial site, now a vibrant space.
The art work was amazing
Lunch here was delicious.
Off we walked to where the discovery monuments are found.
Val is unsure who or what this?? It is the Alfonso de Albuquerque Square. Who knew?
There are a lot of statues and monuments in Lisbon!
This is the Monument of Discoveries. The figures represent leading figures behind Prince Henry the discover.
There are a lot of helpers since this is the other side of the monument. It is a very impressive structure.
Yesterday we tried to see the suspension bridge and never quite made it. Well today I saw it!
It’s the 25 de Abril Bridge that crosses the Tagus river.
The statue on the other side is the Sanctuary of Christ the King!
Belem was protected by the fortified Belem tower.
Couldn’t resist taking this one…
There are huge structures for the Imperial palaces across the road from the tower.
Very ornate.
Time to head back to Alfama. We managed to find the correct bus and after this busy day, we needed a drink!
We leave our airbnb tomorrow for a hotel and the start of our walking adventure. So we checked out the last few things to do in this area.
There is a medieval castle on the hill called Castle de Jorge.
It was a lovely walk up, we took some photos but ….decided we probably didn’t need to pay to go inside. Maybe next time.
You get the idea?
Our final meal we wanted to be somewhere near the many stairs we have been going up and down.
We found Antu. We had an excellent meal!
Antipasto
And Gnocchi
Ahhh such a nice way to end our time in Alfama.
Tomorrow… a hotel…
Uau! (Which is "wow" in Portuguese) What amazing sites.
